Distribution Strategies

Canadians are at the forefront of innovative distribution strategies that take advantage of new digital advocacy tools, social marketing and networking.

Students in Liz Miller’s Documentary and Democracy class interviewed filmmakers about their outreach stragies. Films include Discourse on Discordia with Samir Mallal, Paul Shore and GNN, Making an Impact with Diego Briceno-Orduz, Interview with Francois Prevost and Kaslang Dolma, and Interview with Nadja Drost.

Concordia graduate Ezra Winton explores the under investigated area of distribution in his thesis,
The Spaces Between: Grassroots Documentary Distribution and Exhibition as Counterpublics. Here, he looks at grassroots distribution and exhibition of documentary cinema in Canada. In particular, he interrogates "the spaces between box office numbers, high profile documentaries, and megaplexes". The thesis includes interviews with a number of Canadian filmmakers, promoters, exhibitors and distributors, including Mark Achbar (The Corporation).

He has also published an article in The Dominion named Canadian Dis-Content: Examining CANCON's role in our film industry, which examines how the American film industry's dominance in Canada limits opportunities to screen and support Canadian film.
